Update: Suspect in Bedford Co. Shooting Taken Into Custody
Update: 1:45 a.m.
Bedford Co., VA - It's being called the biggest stand-off Bedford County's seen in 15 years. It ended with three people in the hospital. The two victims are in critical condition at Roanoke Memorial and the suspect is at UVA. It was a day of unexpected twists and turns that officials and neighbors say started with a family feud.
"I knew they'd been feuding again," said Mike Reynolds, a neighbor of the Caldwells.
"They've called the cops on each other right many times," said Mike Dooley, a neighbor.
"What do they fight about?" we asked some neighbors.
"Pretty much anything," said Johnny Ruff.
Officials say the suspect, 55-year-old Dennis Caldwell, shot his own brother and nephew. The victims are 61-year-old Glenn Caldwell and 35-year-old Michael Caldwell. Crews transported them for treatment.
"He was holding his chest and you could also see blood on his leg," said Heather Keys.
Meanwhile, the suspect barricaded himself in the house. The stand-off lasted hours, and neighbors couldn't return home. Mike Reynolds couldn't get to his wife.
"I've called her about a hundred times...I can't get through," said Reynolds.
Tactical units tried negotiating with Caldwell to step-down, using non-flammable gas rounds to get the suspect to surrender.
By 7:15 p.m. Monday, nearly four hours after the first call to 911, the suspect made a drastic move by lighting his house on fire.
"You can't see the house from there because of the trees, but that's where his house is," said Keys.
Firefighters found Caldwell in the basement of his burning home with a pistol at his side - a wild end to an unpredictable day.
"It could have been much, much worse than what it was," said Sheriff Mike Brown.
Dennis Caldwell is charged with two counts of aggravated malicious wounding and two counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony. And, according to Sheriff Brown, there are more charges to come.
Update: 11:38 p.m.
