State Police Investigate Roanoke City SUV Chase, Downtown Crash

Roanoke, VA - The driver and the occupant of an SUV led police on a chase in Roanoke Saturday night, before crashing the vehicle in downtown Roanoke and fleeing on foot, state police say.

Virginia State police say a Virginia State Trooper assigned to the Roanoke City Police Department along with another Roanoke City Police officer attempted to pull over a white Chevrolet Equinox on Peters Creek Road at I-581 around 11 p.m. Saturday, when the SUV sped off onto I-581 South.

From I-581, state police say the driver of the SUV took the downtown Roanoke exit near the Hotel Roanoke, where the officers briefly lost sight of the Equinox.

A few minutes later, state police say numerous 911 calls were received at the Roanoke City 911 dispatch center, saying the Equinox had crashed at the intersection of 14th Street and Salem Avenue, SW.

The driver and passenger of the SUV fled the scene on foot, according to state police.

Roanoke City Police called in a K-9 unit to attempt locating the suspects.

State police are continuing to investigate.
