Pittsylvania Co., VA - After months of uncertainty, folks in Pittsylvania County can finally breathe a sigh of relief.
The Department of Health has given final approval for both Centra and DRMC to get state of the art imaging equipment.
Both groups filed certificates of public need and appealed to the state at a public hearing in January for the specialized CT scanners.
After months of waiting for an answer, DRMCs chief medical officer Saria Saccocio says it feels good to finally move forward.
"What we see this as is a great opportunity for access for patients in the community, for Pittsylvania County as a whole, " said Saccocio.
The news quickly spread through Gretna, where the new Centra emergency center is being built. It will be the first of its kind.
"It is very exciting. Lives will be saved when they don't have to travel 30 or 45 minutes looking for a medical facility, " said resident Susan Hunt.
Supervisor Jerry Hagerman has been behind the Centra project since day one, and he was there - shovel in hand - when they broke ground back in June.
He says the new focus on healthcare in Pittsylvania County will be a lifesaver for his constituents.
"Good healthcare, I don't think you can get too much of it. So, I think it's going to be a blessing for everyone, " Hagerman said.
DRMC sent a letter to the state back in January alleging Centra had inaccuracies in their application and should not be considered.
After a fact finding committee heard from both sides, Centra officials accused DRMC of being afraid of competition.
County residents say having both will give people a choice.

DRMC's CT scanner will be added to a facility in Chatham.
