Southside Residents Participate in 50th Anniversary of March on Washington

Danville, VA - Tens of thousands of people celebrated the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s March on Washington on Saturday.

Some people from the Southside were part of that huge crowd in D.C.

The Martinsville and Pittsylvania County chapters of the NAACP took more than 40 people. They attended a huge rally and marched to the National Mall.

The event was very personal for one woman who remembers her mother marching in 1963.

"My mother who marched because she really admired Dr. King, she prayed for him every night and she wanted to go," said Elizabeth Jones, Secretary for Chatham, Pittsylvania County NAACP. "I went to this one, the 50th, and it means a lot to me because I'm thinking of it from that perspective, from memories."

The commemoration of the march will continue on Wednesday, which is the actual anniversary. There will be rally and a speech from President Obama.
