South Boston, VA - A South Boston woman is fighting for her chickens.
Joy Coe says she has a right to keep her three hens in her backyard.
Her family uses them for eggs, but according to zoning laws within the town, keeping fowl on her property is illegal.
Coe went before the South Boston Planning Commission.
The process of getting the law changed would be a long one, but Coe says town officials have been receptive.
"Other people have come to them as well about that, so as they are combing through the zoning ordinances, I think this is something that they will consider, " Coe said.
She says she started keeping the chickens as a way to educate her children on the importance of knowing where your food comes from and how the animals are treated.
