South Boston Photographer Creating Exhibit on Local African-American Leaders

South Boston, VA-- One photographer in South Boston is celebrating black history month in a unique way, and wants the rest of the community to join in.

Dianna Allen is working to put together an exhibit honoring outstanding African-American leaders from the South Boston and Halifax County area.
Allen said she wants to shine a light on the great accomplishments of African Americans on the southside. It's a way she can celebrate those who give so much.

"I'm not African-American but I still believe that black history is a very big part of not only the African-American population, but it has helped to shape our nation over the years," said Allen.

That's why Allen, owner of Dianna Allen Portrait Design in South Boston, wants to use her talent to celebrate Black History Month.
"I'd love to do an exhibit. But I wanted it to be an exhibit that I thought would make a difference in the area, something that hadn't been done before," Allen said.
With the help of the community she wants to feature the top 10 influential African-Americans in the South Boston and Halifax County area.
"I didn't want this to be a popularity contest," Allen said.
She said it's about honoring those who have proved to be an exceptional positive influence in the community.
She's asking residents to nominate up to three people with a description of why they deserve to be featured. A committee picks the top ten, and after...
"My goal is to do a creative portrait of this individual or these individuals that will show a little but more about where they've come from, where they are now," Allen said.
Allen said history is always in the making
"It's important that we not only look back and appreciate those in Black history that came before our time, but also to recognize the people that are active now," Allen added.
In early March there will be a gallery show featuring the portraits and revealing those top 10 leaders.
The deadline to submit your nomination is February 12. Be sure to also include why you are nominating that person.
To submit your nomination, email Dianna Allen at or message her on Facebook.
