South Boston, VA - The town of South Boston is gearing up for a huge historical celebration this weekend.
The Crossing of the Dan dates all the way back to the American Revolutionary War.
General Nathanael Greene's troops crossed the Dan River just ahead of Lord Cornwallis and the British Army in South Boston.
The big celebration is on Saturday at the Dan River where there will be a wreath laying ceremony and a re-enactment of the Crossing of the Dan.
Historians say if the American troops didn't cross over, the war would have been over right there.
"They cross this bridge every day going back and forth and most of them probably don't realize this is a significant battleground," said Ane Raab, one of the event organizers.
There will also be showing of a new documentary about the Crossing of the Dan.
