SML Flooded With Debris from Roanoke River

Smith Mountain Lake, VA - Upstream flooding has made a huge mess at Smith Mountain Lake, posing a danger to boaters this holiday weekend.

The Roanoke River end of the lake is filled with debris, including trash, logs and tires.

Conservation Police say the R-53 marker is as far as boaters can safely go, coming from Hales Ford Bridge.

"There is the potential for serious injury as well as a lot of property damage to boats," said Lt. Karl Martin with Conservation Police. "It has the possibility of being just below the surface, so it's not even visible during the daytime."

Conservation Police ask that lake property owners check their docks and boats, to make sure everything is properly secured.
