Smart Beginnings in the Danville-Pittsylvania area says 150 children every year in Danville start kindergarten with little or no experience in any classroom setting.
They partnered with Danville Public Schools to hold a free four week school readiness camp at Northside Preschool. Campers learned how to interact with others and developed literacy skills.
Organizers say one the best ways to get your little one ready for school is to spark conversation about things around them and open a book.
"Reading to your kids every day is so important. Studies have been shown that parents that read to their children, those kids do better in school," said Rhonda Wright, Director of Kindergarten Readiness Camp.
They also recommend getting your child used a good bedtime routine.
