Rockbridge, Co, VA - A sinkhole is causing traffic delays on I-81. According to VDOT, the sinkhole is on the right shoulder of I-81 northbound at mile marker 197, closing the right northbound lane.
A detour for motorists is being set up and will be used later Monday into Monday Night.
Trucks will stay on I-81 using the single open northbound lane. Passenger vehicles will detour off of I-81 at exit 195 and rejoin the interstate at exit 200 at Route 710 in the Fairfield area, or at exit 213 at Route 11 in the Greenville area of Augusta County.
The sinkhole location is within the I-81 truck climbing lane project in the Lexington area. The hole is located on the right shoulder and touching the right lane. Within the sinkhole area are underground pipes and drains, which have been damaged.
VDOT says the sinkhole will have to be excavated, filled and paved, but the drainage structures will have to be repaired before the sinkhole work can be completed. Crews will be paving around the sinkhole site Monday Night so two travel lanes can open next to the sinkhole area while the drainage structure work takes place.
