Salem, VA - Shane Padgett has been sentenced to life in prison.
25-year-old Carey Shane Padgett was convicted of capital murder in the beating death of a former high school classmate.
Wednesday, a judge sentenced Padgett to five life terms, plus 175 years.
Prosecutors had sought the death penalty.
Padgett pleaded guilty last October to capital murder, abduction and robbery.
He was arrested in July 2010 after he told police he smoked marijuana with 18-year-old Cara Marie Holley in a field, and then beat her with a tire iron and buried her body in Franklin County.
They were classmates at Roanoke's Patrick Henry High School.
