Senator Newman Unhappy with Redistricting Plan

Lynchburg, VA - The Virginia Senate passed a new redistricting plan Thursday and Senator Steve Newman is not happy with the way the map is shaping up.

He doesn't like the way the new plan breaks up Lynchburg, Bedford County and Roanoke County.

The plan also means that Newman is now in the same district as Senator Ralph Smith in Roanoke.

Newman says the two have been friends for years.

He doesn't envision them running against each other.

"The district ends up being overwhelmingly my old district so I think that I will run. It happens to also be very Republican, so I hope that I could work with Ralph Smith on whatever he would like to do and make that path real easy for him," Newman said.

Another change - a Virginia Beach district lost a senate seat, making room for a new district for the northern part of Lynchburg and covering Appomattox and Buckingham counties.
