Second Man Dies after SML Boat Crash

      Jim McCulloch and Ronnie Lemons
Lynchburg, VA - A second man has died following a boat crash on Smith Mountain Lake July 31.

James McCulloch, from Moneta, died Sunday at Virginia Baptist Hospital, according to Conservation Police. Sgt. Bryan Young said McCulloch had been transferred from Roanoke Memorial Hospital, to the long term intensive care unit at Virginia Baptist.

McCulloch, 68, and his friend Ronnie Lemons, 73, were on a bass boat that collided with a cruiser boat, according to the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Lemons' body sunk with the two boats and was recovered nine days after the crash.

Insurance companies had the boats pulled from the lake, according to Young. Conservation Police collected evidence from the boats, which will be tested at the state lab.

McCulloch's funeral will be held Friday in Vinton.
