Lynchburg, VA - The Salvation Army kicked off its red kettle campaign in our area.

ABC 13 Anchors Pattie Martin, Len Stevens and Danner Evans helped them do it. It's called the Media Mogul contest.

The money goes toward keeping the Salvation Army's emergency shelter open and also helps other area programs.

"I think it gets people into the spirit of Christmas and of giving. When they see they can go out and give money earlier it just gives us a better advantage as far as money wises goes," said Nancy Shivers, the Red Kettle campaign coordinator.

Last year, the Salvation Army raised $242,000 during its campaign.
