Route 29 Re-Opens in Amherst County After Tractor Trailer Crash

Madison Heights, VA - State police say just before 11 a.m. Friday, a truck driver, headed southbound, crossed the center median and struck a northbound SUV near the Natural Bridge exit.

Eyewitnesses described the scary scene in 911 calls.

"I don't know if there's any injuries or not but a tractor trailer just rolled across the median and nailed a car," a caller tells an Amherst County dispatcher.

State police are trying to determine why the driver of the semi truck crossed the median, headed into oncoming traffic, and slammed into the driver's side of a white SUV.

When you look at the damage -- one word comes to mind: lucky.

The impact tore off the entire side of the SUV, but the director of public safety says the driver and passenger had non-life threatening injuries. They were cut out of the vehicle and taken to Lynchburg General Hospital.

"The people in the passenger vehicle were very fortunate," Gary Roakes said after the wreck.

One man said he was inside his home about two miles away, when he heard what sounded like a tire blowing out and then a loud boom.

The crash investigation backed up traffic along Route 29 for nearly a mile.

State police have identified the truck driver as Robert Preston Bryant, 34, and charged him with reckless driving.
