Route 29 in Amherst County Back Open After Cell Phone Tower Issues

Amherst Co., VA- A portion of Route 29 in Amherst County is back open after officials closed it because of a cell phone tower fire. Gary Roakes, the Public Safety Director for Amherst County, tells us an AT&T cell tower owned by AEP caught fire earlier Sunday evening.

After investigating, Roakes says someone stole the copper wiring at the base of the pole that helped ground the tower. He says that likely contributed to the fire. We're told a part of the road had to be shut down because of high voltage power lines that connected to the cell tower, and crossed over the bypass.

AEP crews were called to check the power lines for any issues. None were found and the road was opened back up to traffic.
