Rocky Mount Man Indicted For 2nd Degree Murder in Infant's Death
Rocky Mount, VA - A Rocky Mount man has been indicted on second degree murder charges for allegedly killing a three month old baby in his care.
Xavier Craighead, 20, is being held in the Franklin County Jail without bond.
The tragedy started back in May when police were called to Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital for a report of an unresponsive child.
The child died a few weeks later in Roanoke.
Investigators say they determined the baby was in Craighead's care for a short period of time while the child's mother was away.
An autopsy shows the baby had a skull fracture and a significant subdural hemorrhage, which lead to his death.
The autopsy also shows some of the baby's ribs had been previously broken and had started to heal.
Since that time, Rocky Mount Police have been piecing together what happened prior to the hospitalization.
Monday a Grand Jury returned three indictments, including second degree murder.
"Cases like these are very complex. We have to wait for an autopsy report, the medical examiner's findings, things like that. And again, a case this complex that can take some time," said Sgt. Josh Harris with the Rocky Mount Police Department.
Craighead is also charged with felony child abuse and felony neglect.
