LYNCHBURG, Va. - Liberty head football coach Danny Rocco has accepted an offer to assume the same position at the University of Richmond.
Rocco will become the 35th head coach in the history of the Richmond program, taking over for Wayne Lineburg, who has served as the Spiders' interim head coach during the 2011 season. Richmond finished the year 3-8 overall and 0-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
"There is no question that Danny Rocco has done a tremendous job with our football program during the past six years," stated Barber. "The time and effort he and his staff have given our University during his tenure will not be forgotten."
"The entire Liberty family is appreciative and grateful for the success Liberty football has had under Danny's watch. Not only was their success found in wins and championships experienced on the field, but also those accomplishments in the classroom and in the lives of the young men who have been part of his teams. We wish Danny, Julie and their family, the very best as they begin a new chapter in their lives."
Rocco quickly turned Liberty's football program around when he took over the reins in 2006. He took a Liberty program that finished 1-10 in 2005 to the nation's No. 1 FCS improvement with a 6-5 record in 2006.
The following four seasons, Liberty captured four-straight Big South Conference titles and became a perennial Top 25 FCS program. During his six years on Liberty Mountain, Rocco posted a 47-20 overall record, a 26-5 mark in Big South play and six-straight winning seasons.
"At this time, and with the assistance of Carr Sports Associates, we will immediately begin a national search for our next head football coach," continued Barber. "The competitive goals for our football program will remain the same: winning conference championships, participating and succeeding in the FCS playoffs and competing at the very highest level of collegiate football."
A national search for the eighth head coach in the history of the Liberty football program will begin immediately in cooperation with Carr Sports Associates.
