Roanoke Police Say Two-Year-Old Girl Died After Accidentally Left in Van
Roanoke, VA - Roanoke police are investigating after a two-year-old girl died after being found unresponsive in the back seat of a van.
They say Sunday around 4:30 p.m., they got to the 1500 block of Kenwood Boulevard SE for a call of an unresponsive child.
The child was found in a car seat in a vehicle parked in the driveway of a house.
Roanoke Fire-EMS was the first on the scene and pronounced the child deceased.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures in Roanoke reached 90 degrees on Sunday afternoon.
Neighbors are really shaken up.
"You have children. They should come first. Protect that child," said Clifton Peyton Alcorn, Senior, who lives across the street.
Police say right now it appears the girl was accidentally left in a closed van by a parent for an extended period of time.
Family members and witnesses have been interviewed by police and potential physical evidence has been gathered.
The child's body has been sent to the Medical Examiner for an autopsy.
Detectives continue to investigate and have been in consultation with the Commonwealth Attorney's Office with the ongoing investigation.
