Retired South Boston Major General, Mayor, Passes Away

Lynchburg, VA - Retired Major General and mayor of South Boston Carroll Thackston has passed away. The Virginia National Guard says he died Sunday at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was 79 years old.

Thackston served as adjutant general from July 1994 to September 1998 and served in other leadership roles in the past.

Thackston served on South Boston town council after he left the guard and later became mayor.

In a statement, Governor McDonnell says Virginia has lost a true patriot and a dedicated public servant.
