Report: Engineers Warned Duke Energy About Pipe Under Coal Ash Dump in 1986
Danville, VA - A subpoena shows engineers warned Duke Energy about a storm water pipe under its coal ash dump in 1986, concerned it could leak. The same pipe is the one that collapsed in February and coated the Dan River in toxic sludge. The report shows engineers told Duke that pipe was made of corrugated metal and needed to be monitored. Duke officials, however, said after the spill that the company didn't know the pipe was made out of metal. The report was subpoenaed by federal prosecutors as part of an ongoing criminal investigation. Duke has not commented.
