Remember the Victims by Pattie Martin
What a couple of weeks of news it has been! First the deadly tornadoes that slammed the South. I grew up in Tornado Alley and never saw anything like that. Hundreds of people were killed in just one day... five of them in Virginia.
We got a little relief from the bad news with the royal wedding. I wasn't sure I was going to watch. I just didn't have a lot of interest in it. I was at work when the coverage started at 4am and I suddenly found myself drawn in. Kate Middleton was beautiful. It was definitely a fairy tale come true.
Within two days came the news that Osama bin Laden had been killed. I had gone to bed early the night before, so when I walked into work the next morning I was definitely taken by surprise.
Things have calmed down now and we've moved on to other news (thought the bin Laden story is still a hot topic). I just hope that over time we don't forget the victims of the tornadoes. This is something that is going to affect the rest of their lives. There are so many ways we can help.
Gleaning for the World is just one organization reaching out. I was at one of their collection sites last weekend and I can't tell you how wonderful it was to see so many of you stepping up to help. From donations of toothpaste and shampoo, to tarps and blankets, folks around here really came to the rescue.
It's not too late to help. Gleaning is always collecting for those in need. If you can't get to the store, a monetary donation will help them pay to ship supplies to victims of disasters. You can also get in touch with Gleaning to find about an opportunity to volunteer. Believe me, it's worth every minute of your time!
