Lynchburg, VA- The Red Cross has put out an urgent call for blood donations. They say every summer they run into the same problem: fewer people giving blood. They say it is because people are on vacation, and because students, who make up a large part of their donor base, are normally out of town.
The Red Cross also made an emergency appeal like this last winter when severe weather hit.
They say the need for blood is very great. The shelf life of red cells is only 42 days, and they say platelets, which are critical to burn victims, bone marrow and cancer patients only have a shelf life of five days.
The Red Cross says if you would like to give you can walk-in to the Tate Springs Road Location in Lynchburg on Fridays. They also say you can schedule an appointment and learn more at redcrossblood.org
