Possible That Parents Of Child Found In Hot Car Will Not Face Charges
Roanoke, VA - Roanoke's Commonwealth's Attorney says it's possible that no charges will be filed in the death of a two-year-old left in a hot van on Sunday.
Caldwell says the evidence he currently has shows no criminal intent by either parent, both of whom are cooperating with the investigation.
Thirty years ago a similar case came before Caldwell's office and, at that time, no charges were filed against the parent.
He says the answer isn't locking people up if criminal intent isn't at play.
"From my point of view the answer to try to stem this rests with technology. Something has to be done to alert people that a child is in the car," said Caldwell.
A complete autopsy, including a medical examiner's determination as to cause of death, could take from several days to several weeks.
Any determination regarding criminal charges would then follow.
