UPDATE: Police Respond to Suspicious Item in Roanoke, Close Several Streets

Roanoke, VA - Roanoke Police closed down several streets near downtown Wednesday morning after someone called about a suspicious item found in a dumpster.

A police spokesman says around 10 a.m., a man who was throwing away trash saw the item, which included several batteries taped together and wires.

While police investigated, a few businesses were evacuated and parts of at least three streets were closed.

Others weren't allowed in their buildings in the first place.

"You never know these days... you really don't. So I understand, you know, the police taking the precautions they are," said Vicky Lumpp, who was one of the employees not allowed inside.

"The citizen did the right thing. Call it in. Let the experts come in and determine what the situation is to makesure everything is safe for the community," said Sgt.Jason Holt with Roanoke City Police.

Police say they do not believe the item was made as an explosive device.
