Police Release Suspect's Name in New River Valley Community College Shooting
Update 11:30 p.m.:
Christiansburg, VA- We now know the name of the suspect in Friday's mall shooting in Christiansburg. Police say 18-year-old Neil Allen MacInnis is the man who opened fire on two women.
The shooting occurred just before two p.m. Police say MacInnis is a currently enrolled student at New River Valley Community College. The school's Christiansburg campus is within the New River Valley Mall.
Friday, police said MacInnis drove there, took a gun from his car, and opened fire.
"The students heard gunfire but weren't able to see anything," said Dr. Mark Rowh, Vice President of New River Valley Community College.
"The male subject exited his vehicle with a weapon and entered the New River Valley Community College. The suspect then shot two adult females with the weapon," said Mark Sisson Chief of Christiansburg Police.
Sources say MacInnis wielded a shotgun. An off-duty mall security guard, as well as two Christiansburg Police officers subdued MacInnis, and he was in custody within five minutes of the shooting.
The mall was immediately vacated. Montgomery County Schools, as well as the community college, were on lockdown.
"An extensive sweep of the entire mall and adjoining community college was conducted. No additional suspects or threats have been located," said Sisson.
One of MacnInnis's victims, police say, is a part-time employee of the College. Both women are said to be in stable condition at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
"I like to think of a school or a college as a sanctuary where people should go and learn and be together. And this is just an awful kind of thing to happen, and it's too bad it happens with such frequency in our society," said Dr. Rowh.
School sources say MacInnis is a student at NRCC. According to the website NRCCstudents.org, a bio written by MacInnis says he lives minutes from the campus and studies web design, computer science, and psychology.
Police are still searching of a motive for this shooting tonight. Also, police have revealed that MacInnis completed the Christiansburg Citizens Police Academy in 2012. MacInnis is now facing four charges, including malicious wounding and the use of a firearm in commission of a felony.
