Police Continue Search For Man Charged In Murder Of Amherst Mother

Amherst Co., VA - More now on the woman Amherst County Deputies say Cordell Carter killed in broad daylight and in cold blood. A mother of two boys, and according to neighbors a kind and quiet woman.

"I know that they're going to do everything they can to try to catch the guy that did this to Jennifer" said Tammy Martin.

Martin was hit hard by the news about her neighbor, Jennifer Johnson.

"To know that that was done to her, and she was such a sweetheart" she said.

The 30 year old mother of two according to her Facebook was a Liberty University graduate. Martin says she lived at 1773 South Amherst Highway with her two young boys.

"I can't believe it happened to her, I can't believe it happened to anybody in this little area" said Martin.

Amherst County investigators say around 2 p.m. Tuesday the 911 call came in. When they arrived, Johnson was found dead inside.

No word on how or why she was killed.

Police scoured the scene though for much of the day for clues that may lead them to 49 year old Cordell Carter, charged with Johnson's murder.

At his home in Campbell County on Old Rustburg Road, the search was well under way. 10 tactical teams surrounded his home, no sign though of Carter.

"Yeah, I am frightened" said Anne Ferguson.

For 25 years, Ferguson has lived doors down from Johnson.

"Nothing has ever happened like that in this neighborhood that I know of before, it makes you think twice. It gets close by and it gets scary" she said.
