Pittsylvania Co.,VA-- It was a very sad day for Pittsylvania County Thursday, after they lost one of their own.
Chairman of the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors Marshall Ecker was found dead at his home.
The cause of death was a possible heart attack while working on a home improvement project. His co-workers were still in disbelief, and said it's a huge loss to the County.
"I was just stunned," said Jerry Hagerman, member of Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors. "We had talked, we were planning on meeting this weekend and I thought he was in perfect health to be honest I just didn't know what to say."
Pittsylvania County Supervisor Jerry Hagerman said other members of the board were also completely stunned when they learned of the unexpected death of their fellow colleague, Marshall Ecker.
"They're in shock, disbelief," said Hagerman.
Ecker died Thursday afternoon at his home in Gretna. He was elected to the Board in 2007 and became chairman earlier this year. He was popular for his strong stance against uranium mining, and fought hard for keeping Christian prayer in supervisor meetings.
"Marshall ran the board of supervisors very well,"said Hagerman. "He was articulate in what he'd done, how he performed, he took to the job extremely well and he loved that job."
Hagerman said he was also a great man outside of the board room.
"Marshall would help you do anything," said Hagerman. "He was a good person."
He said no one will be able to replace Ecker.
"He is going to be really sadly missed," said Hagerman. "I just want to say how truly sorry I am to his wife and to his family."
Ecker was 68. The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors is expected to release a statement, and we'll have more information when it becomes available.
