Pittsylvania County Schools Eliminate 39 Positions

Chatham, VA - Thirty-nine positions are being eliminated from the Pittsylvania County School System. That's 26 teachers, seven administrators and six assistant positions.

This comes after the district faces a $2.7 million budget deficit.

Administrators are proposing cutting two school programs as well. They say each position eliminated will not result in a lay off. They've chosen to just not rehire for staff that are retiring.

Administrators say the cut backs will unfortunately impact class sizes.

"With this year's budget cuts, over the last three or four years, we've been cut $13 million. So yes, we've cut a lot of positions out of our budget, and yes, this will in addition to the other positions that have been eliminated, impact the classroom," said Don Johnson, the assistant superintendent for business in the county's schools.

School officials hope the county board of supervisors will vote on a budget in the coming months.
