Pet Therapy Starting at Danville Regional Medical Center

Danville, VA - Danville Regional Medical Center now has four-legged guests visiting patients. They have started bringing in dogs for pet therapy.

Wednesday they had a 'pet parade' to show off their new volunteers. There are 14 certified therapy dogs in the program for patients who just had surgery or a stroke. The dogs also visit with family members.

"Research has really shown that just the touch of a pet and the visibility of a dog in healthcare really reduces the anxiety and the stress," said Debra Clark, Chief Nursing Officer at DRMC.
Right now, they're only going once a week, but they hope to increase the schedule. They say it is just as rewarding to the handlers as it is to the patients.
