Person of Interest in Henry County Homicide Investigation

Henry Co., VA - Police tape surrounds a home on King Air Avenue that was the scene of what the sheriff's office is now calling a homicide.

Joyce Mitchell, 74, was found dead in her home Monday around 5:30 p.m.

"Family and neighbors had gone over to do a well-being check, discovered a body and we went down and began the death investigation," said Henry County Sheriff Lane Perry.

The victim's car was found off an embankment on the Blue Ridge Parkway, which led authorities to Arthur McClard, 37.

Investigators said McClard had been seen driving the victim's car, and they believe he may be the key to solving this case.

"We're asking the public's help. He has been known to live in the Roanoke area -- not necessarily have a known address. He just lives wherever he can and may even at times just live outside," said Perry.

Neighbors said Mitchell lived alone, but family members would check on her periodically.

They could never have suspected something like this would happen.

"It's a very nice park, we've had no problems whatsoever. I was shocked, absolutely shocked," said neighbor Shirley Hoffman.

Now many in the Ridgeway community are on edge.

Until the case is solved, neighbor Carl Dillard said he'll be taking a few extra precautions when it comes to safety.

"It'll make me start locking my doors now. A whole lot of times I just sit right there and leave more door unlocked, but I'll think about that now."
