Bedford Co, VA - Thursday was the Peaks of Otter's last big event before the lodge and restaurant closes its doors this Sunday.
Last-minute visitors Thursday were saddened to learn about the iconic lodge closing.
"It's really unfortunate,"said Barbara Lovett.
"It is disappointing," added Susan Nicholas.
"This is such a special place," added Dan Mohler, who traveled all the way from Delaware.
Folks have visited here since the 1960s, and that's what lodge goers say keeps them coming back. At the very least, for the scenery.
"This is God's decoration, you just can't get any better than this, it's absolutely gorgeous," Lovett added.
The food will also be missed by many.
"The dessert is amazing,"Lovett continued.
"I'm thinking of doing a walk along the lake here and going back in for another meal," said Mohler.
Peaks management prepared to serve more than 16 hundred people for this meal alone.
Several fans of the site threw the lodge a huge farewell party, giving back to that one special place that gave so much back to the community.
"It was always here, picnicking and climbing to the top of the peaks," Betty Shelton said.
For years, Shelton brought her family here. It's hard for her to imagine this being her last meal at the Lodge.
"I just don't like to think about that," Shelton said.
