Patrick Dempsey Back At VIR's Biggest Race of The Year

Halifax Co., VA-- Between 40,000 and 50,000 people flocked to Virginia International Raceway this weekend. It's VIR's biggest race weekend of the year all about luxury cars, the Tudor United Sportscar Championship.

Thousands of race fans at VIR also got a taste of Hollywood. One of ABC's Grey's Anatomy stars, Patrick Dempsey, was there.

Most know him as Dr. Derek Shepherd on the show or McDreamy, but Dempsey said when he's not on set, he's most likely racing. He's been racing competitively since 2004.

He said this was his sixth or seventh time at VIR, and as a driver loved all the new improvements made on the track this year. He raced a Porsche in the American Le Mans Series.

Dempsey said what he likes most about racing is the camaraderie with his team mates and just the element of competition. Now racing has become a full-time job for hi, he said it's quite tough balancing both careers. However, he has a strong passion for acting and racing and said he always finds a way to make it work.

"It's tricky when I go back and I start shooting on Grey's. I had to take a red eye in. That's always difficult, I could have done the promoter test day and had a little bit more seat time here which is always important," Dempsey said.

VIR said this race weekend has not only been good for them, but great for local businesses. Many hotels and restaurants in the area have been cashing in all weekend
