Pastor Says More Minority Teachers Needed in Henry County Schools
Martinsville, VA-- A Henry County pastor says there needs to be more diversity in the teaching staff in Henry County schools.
Reverend Thurman Echols expressed his concern to the school board on Thursday at a meeting, saying they need to hire more minority teachers to match the demographic in the schools.
He said it would have a great effect on students.
"If they see adults, black males especially, if they see females and role models and persons that look like them, I think that gives them a positive outlook toward their future," said Rev. Thurman Echols.
"It is a challenge, and I think it's going to continue to be a challenge because information received says that fewer and fewer minorities are going into education," said Curtis Millner, Henry County School Board Member.
School board member Curtis Millner agrees with Echols. He said he thinks the best way to recruit more minority teachers in the county is to promote from within.
