Parts of I-81 Closing at Times Due to Snow, Accidents

A screengrab of ABC 13's VDOT Cameras showed the traffic issues Thursday afternoon up and down I-81 in the New River Valley.

Montgomery Co., VA - A second round of snowfall, with rates of 1-2 inches an hour proved to be too much for travelers on Interstate 81 in the New River and Roanoke Valleys Thursday afternoon.

VDOT confirmed to ABC 13 Thursday afternoon, sections of the interstate were shut down at times to clear accidents.

ABC 13's VDOT cameras confirmed traffic back-ups along I-81 from Christiansburg to Roanoke.

While accidents are cleared, snow covered conditions and snow totals of nearly two feet, may cause more issues into the night.

If you must travel tonight, prepare for possible back-ups. Have a kit of blankets, food, and make sure you have plenty of gas in your car.
