Parsons Named G.W. Head Basketball Coach
George Washington High School in Danville has hired Ron Parsons as its new boys basketball coach.
He was told he had secured the position on Thursday and then the school board approved him on Friday.
Parsons has been the Physical Education and Driver's Education teacher at G.W. since 2007. "I think it's going to be great. I communicate with kids every day. Teaching and coaching - there's not a whole lot of difference," he said Friday night during a phone conversation.
The 64-year-old, who resides in Reidsville, NC said he feels like he's 50. "I do a fast paced 3.5 mile walk every day," he said.
In addition to teaching at G.W., he was an assistant coach under former head coach Bobby Martin for four seasons and prior to that Parsons was the head coach at Halifax County H.S. and Reidsville H.S. in North Carolina. He coached Reidsville to two state championships in 1994 and 2003. The '94 team went a perfect 30-0. "I wasn't really interested in being an assistant anymore. I'm more of a hands-on person and that was pretty tough being an assistant," he said.
Parsons will take over a successful program. He replaces Thomas Carr, who left after one season - a season in which the Eagles went 25-3. "I just went to a few [G.W.] games last year. It's hard to watch from the sidelines when you know you could be involved," he said.
Parsons said G.W. has some exceptional players coming up. "Some of them are young but at G.W., just like Reidsville, some years are just going to be better than others but each year you're going to have decent talent," he said.
He has several people in mind to fill out his coaching staff and will conduct interviews in the coming months.
