After John Caleb Sanders hit a pair of free throws to pull Liberty (1-3) within five 79-74 with 31 seconds left, the Flames fouled Spruill, who knocked down two from the stripe. After the teams exchanged two more free throws each, Marshall missed a 3-point shot which was rebounded by Spruill.
His ensuing layup put the Seahawks up 85-76 with 10 seconds to play, sealing the win.
Marshall led the Flames with 24 points.
Tanner Milson scored 23 points, hitting 5 of 7 3-pointers and 8 of 9 free throws, for UNCW (3-2). Ben Eblen added 13 points and Cedrick Williams finished with 10.
-After the game John Caleb Sanders went to the practice floor inside the Vines Center to shoot while still in uniform.
-Coach Dale Layer said the team needs to build some chemistry on the floor. A number of players are playing different positions. He named Antwan Burrus and Tomasz Gielo in regards to that situation.
-Layer said, "We're not playing hard enough. We're not playing tough enough and that comes back to coaching. I've got to do a better job of it."
-Layer told the team after the game in the locker room that the Flames started slow last year and ended up in the NCAA Tournament.
-There were a total of 56 fouls called (29 against UNCW, 27 against LU). That resulted in a total of 76 free throws (31-41 for UNCW, 34-35 for LU). The new hand checking rule has been instituted this year and that's why many defenders are being called for what used to be considered "ticky tack" fouls. Layer said he thinks everyone is adjusting to the new rule including players, coaches, and referees.
