One Run Hurts Tunstall in Title Game
RADFORD, Va. - Sherando won its first-ever state baseball title Sunday with a 2-1 victory over Tunstall at the Virginia High School League's 2013 Spring Jubilee.
Jacob Carney's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth plated Taylor Loudan with the go-ahead run for the Warriors. Loudan led off the sixth with a single and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Adam Whitacre.
John Bentley, who threw a complete game and gave up just one run on six hits, coaxed a pair of groundouts and a fly ball in a perfect seventh inning to secure the victory for Sherando. Luke Simpson also threw a complete game for Tunstall, but took the loss despite giving up just six hits and striking out eight Warrior batters.
Sherando took a 1-0 lead in the second after Reid Entsminger tripled and came in to score on an RBI single by Bentley.
Tunstall tied the game in the fourth on an RBI fielder's choice by Gavin Payne. Luke Kaesmeyer singled to open the inning followed by a single by Chase Scarce. Kaesmeyer came in to score the Trojans' only run of the game on Payne's ground ball with the bases loaded. Bentley got Hunter Ashworth looking to end the threat.
Bentley retired the final 10 batters he faced, including five of his six strikeouts on the day during that stretch.
