One Man Dead After Appomattox House Fire

Appomattox, VA - A man is dead after a fire tore through his home in Appomattox Wednesday.

He lived on Sunny Dale Avenue alone; neighbors describe him as quiet and kind.

The cause of the fire that took his life is still under investigation.

The call came in to fire officials at around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Neighbors say the residents on the street where the fire broke were just waking up, kids getting ready to go to school. What they saw next they say was devastating.

"You couldn't see anything from I'd say right there at the beginning of his driveway all the way back. It was nothing but smoke and flames" said neighbor, Kristen Hoilman.

The same flames that tore through much of one man's house, leaving him dead, and neighbors terrified.

"And then when the fire department got here, which was right after that, there was like an explosion at the door" said neighbor, Tina Bass.

Neighbors say that blast blew the front door off its hinges. No word on what caused the blast.

Shortly after, neighbors say fire fighters carried out the man to the front yard, and began performing CPR.

But by then, the damage was done.

"It hits a soft spot you know? Somebody on your street's gone. So yeah, it's pretty sad" said Hoilman.

The body of the man was taken to the medical examiner.
