Richmond, VA - A local nurse has been reprimanded by state regulators, for giving a Bedford County teenager more than twice the recommended dosage of a powerful painkiller.
A two-member Virginia Board of Nursing panel found Yevonne Powers violated patient welfare regulations when she gave the teen a 4-milligram shot of Dilaudid. The medication has a known risk of respiratory depression. Powers can appeal the decision to the full board.
Dr. Joyce Luteyn, the physician who ordered the medication, faces a Board of Medicine hearing in December. Powers told the panel she trusted the doctor.
Jessica Hart, 17, died seven hours after receiving that shot at the MedExpress in Roanoke County last April. An attorney for Hart's family confirms she was treated by Powers and Luteyn.
The charge does not directly link Powers' actions to the teen's death. The medical examiner says she died from complications of mononucleosis. Roanoke County Police closed a criminal investigation of the case.
