Danville, VA -- The Danville Fire Department has seen a decrease this year in the number of arsons. So far they've had seven arsons in the city compared to the 14 arsons they had at this time last year.Assistant Fire Marshal Richie Guill suspects the arsons could be down because they have been so good about catching the suspects and pressing charges. Guill says when people see the consequences, they may be less likely to commit the crime.
Setting fire to a dwelling is a felony.
"Not only does it clear up our time for fighting fire it also makes it safer for the people in the street. Because obviously if there is a fire burning out of control somewhere, it puts everyone in danger around it," said Guill.
The number of total fires this year in the city is also down from last year.
