North Carolina-Virginia Tech: Week Long Coverage

Virginia Tech (4-1) takes on North Carolina (1-3) Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in Blacksburg.

-Senior center Andrew Miller said "this team can be really good."

-The players and coach Frank Beamer dismissed the idea that since Virginia Tech beat East Carolina and East Carolina blew out North Carolina that the Hokies will have no problem with the Tar Heels.

-Antone Exum's return from knee surgery continues to be a question mark. He's expected to visit again with Dr. James Andrews. Beamer didn't seem too eager to discuss Exum until he actually returns. That date has been pushed back at least two times. If and when he returns coaches may have to make a decision as to who starts in Tech's defensive secondary. True freshmen Kendall Fuller and Brandon Facyson have filled in extremely well. Facyson has four interceptions. That's tied for the most in the nation. Facyson said on Monday that the coaches have not even spoken to them about Exum's situation.

-Logan Thomas is banged up but will play Saturday. He has an oblique (abdominal) strain and a mildly sprained ankle.

-Thomas reminded the media that Tech won its first ACC game last season (also against Georgia Tech) and then lost four out of its next five games in conference play.

-Tech's defense has allowed a total of 44 points in its last four games so it would be unlikely to see UNC put up a lot of points. However if they did Thomas feels the offense can play in a high-scoring shootout game and win that type of game.

-Wide receiver Willie Byrn injured his knee against GT. Beamer is hopeful he begins to feel better later this week. The injury report will be issued on Thursday.

-Despite missing another field goal against GT, Beamer is confident in kicker Cody Journell. Beamer mentioned Journell kicked a lot better Sunday. "They were right down the middle with the perfect height," he said.

-Tech coaches gave the players the weekend off. Facyson, whose hometown is close to Atlanta, stayed in that area and went to his high school team's game Friday night against one of their rivals.
