No Decision Announced on UVa Quarterback
Charlottesville - For five weeks, UVa coach Mike London has said Michael Rocco is the starting quarterback. He did NOT say that Monday. However, he didn't say Rocco had been replaced, either.
Two wins have been followed by three straight losses and Cavalier fans want to know, will Phillip Sims take over as the starting quarterback?
Mike London, 15-15 AS VIRGINIA HEAD COACH, said "For me and Coach Lazor and the offensive staff for everyone to understand, this is not just about one individual. It's about the team and who gives us the best chance and that decision will be made very soon."
Rocco has started 18 straight games but has eight interceptions this season compared to just six touchdowns.
London said "Michael Rocco is a great young man, has been our starting quarterback for 18 months. I value him and coming into the season he was, and until a decision is made, he is the guy that is the quarterback."
In limited play, Sims has completed 60 percent of his passes to go along with five touchdowns and no interceptions. Players leave the decision making up to the coaches but if London chooses Sims, number 14 will be ready.
Kevin Parks, VIRGINIA SOPH. RUNNING BACK, said "Phillip is a great leader, a great vocal leader. You can tell just through his play he's a leader. When he came in it was like he'd been in there before. He had great poise, calling the plays in the huddle, calling the right plays."
Whoever the quarterback is, he'll go up against a Duke team that's 4-1 but the Blue Devils' victories are over North Carolina Central, Florida International, Memphis and Wake Forest.
