Danville, VA - Recent crimes in Danville have more people being more careful.
There have been home invasions, robberies, a shooting, and a carjacking in a span of just 10 days.
Police say it is unusual to have so many serious crimes, in such a short amount of time. Now, many are realizing the importance of watching out for your neighbors.
In the past couple weeks, more and more areas in Danville have turned into crime scenes.
"A couple robberies, a stabbing, a homicide on South Boston Road, a home invasion on Edmunds Street," said Lt. Doug Crawford.
Over the weekend, another home invasion took place. Police are investigating and have stepped up patrols. But they're staying tight-lipped about whether these crimes are related.
"Something as serious as these crimes in a short amount of time is unusual," said Lt. Crawford.
They advise you to always be aware of your surroundings. Danville resident Tammy Morrison already is.
"I was coming home from work that night and when I came over, I saw all the rescue squads I was like what in the world is going on," said Morrison.
"She later found out her neighbor's home was invaded. That case soon turned into a homicide.
"We're being very precautious," said Morrison. "Sometimes I have to be at work as early as 4 a.m. so when I'm leaving I make sure I have a light on."
The crimes have residents watching out for themselves and their neighbors.
"The neighbors have did a little pact where you see anything, going on suspicious, let each other know," said Morrison
"We've got an alarm system," said Thomas Roberts, a Danville resident. "Everybody's just going to have to start watching out for one another."
One possible silver lining: more people joining neighborhood watch programs.
"There are lots of side benefit of caring about your neighbors," said John Wilt, who participates in a neighborhood watch program.
Danville police are urging residents to give them a call if they see anything that could be criminal in nature.
