Botetourt County, VA - The Virginia State Police are continuing their investigation into a 5 vehicle crash. The accident happened Monday around 7:40 p.m. on I-81 northbound at the 167.7 mile post in Botetourt County.
Troopers say a Chevrolet pick up pulling a car trailer hydroplaned and jackknifed blocking the right lane. A chain reaction crash then occurred that involved the first tractor-trailer striking the pick up hauling the car trailer and then two other tractor-trailers colliding into the first truck. A fourth tractor-trailer operated by United Parcel Service tried to avoid the crash which was blocking the roadway and in doing so ran off the right side of the roadway striking a guard rail and overturned.
The operator of the pick up James E. Gibbs, age 59, of Hampton, Va. was transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital along with the UPS truck driver James C. Allen, age 59, of Waynesboro, Va. both sustained non-life threatening injuries in the crash.
Charges are pending at this time and no further information regarding the crash is available. I-81 northbound was being diverted off the interstate at exit 162 in Buchanan but all lanes are now back open.
