Mother of Accused Shooter Wants to Set Record Straight
Gladys, VA - The mother of the man charged with murdering a Concord man at party over the weekend says the shooting was accidental.
Joshua Graves is being held without bond, charged with second degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Campbell County investigators say he shot Travis "Duck" Daniel after an argument around 2 a.m. Saturday.
Easter Graves called our newsroom Tuesday, wanting to defend her family.
Although she admits she doesn't know the circumstances that led to the shooting, she says her son is not the cold-hearted killer that's being portrayed.
She says Joshua Graves, 23, was looked up to by his two younger brothers, was never in trouble with the law, and graduated from William-Campbell Combined School, before pursuing a career as an electrician.
She says her son heard about the party Friday night from a friend on Facebook but she doesn't know why he had a gun.
Witnesses told investigators Graves fired once in the air and then shot Travis "Duck" Daniel as he tried wrestling the gunman to the ground.
Easter Graves says her heart is hurting for his family as much as hers.
"I don't want people to think that I'm just making accusations because my son's in trouble -- this comes from my heart. I didn't know the guy that lost his life and the guy didn't know my son that was involved in this. But, my heart goes out to the family that lost their son," Graves said.
Daniel will be laid to rest after his funeral, scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday.
