Roanoke, VA - Outside of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital Bob Terry's daughter-in-law, Kim, can only guess as to why anyone would beat an 80-year-old man to the brink of death: just for a possible few hundred dollars.
"The person that attacked my father-in-law might have assumed he carried money with him at the end of the business day, which he did not, and I think that angered this person," said Kim Terry, who spent the morning with her injured father-in-law.
The man who is an integral part of his community is laying in a hospital bed needing help just to keep his shattered face together. His own family does not even recognize him.
"He currently has screws and bolts and wires holding his face together."
Doctors at Roanoke Memorial have been able to stabilize Terry, but the road ahead will not be easy, especially for a man of Terry's age.
"This is a pretty long haul. We're not sure how long but, the hospital stay, the healing process, the rehabilitation, it's a long haul," said Kim Terry.
The family continues to get over the initial shock of what happened at Bob Terry's beloved store. His recovery is now priority, as well as catching the man that nearly killed Terry so they can try to understand why.
"We still cannot understand how someone could beat an 80-year-old man to the point that he is unrecognizable to his family," said Kim Terry.
The family has started a financial assistance fund for Bob to help with his long recovery.
