Montgomery Co., VA - Officials from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office are warning residents against a recent phone scam.
They say people in the area have been receiving calls from people pretending to be family members in order to solicit money.
Deputies say the callers claim to be incarcerated in Mexico or other locations and that they need money sent via wire transfer in order to be released.
The sheriff's office wants to make sure people are aware of the scam.
They recommend attempting to contact the family member who allegedly needs assistance using a phone number or means familiar to you.
