Moneta, VA - Fire safety is important in the home and Bedford County elementary school students are learning it at school.
Puppets explained fire safety basics to students at Moneta Elementary School Wednesday morning. The kids got to act out what they learned. They practiced crawling low through a playhouse filled with fake smoke, and escaping through a window. The children learned the proper stop, drop, and roll technique. They even practiced calling 911 and giving their address to dispatchers on a toy phone.
The kids say they're going to share what they learned with their families.
"I'm going to go home and tell them we need to make a plan," said Makenna Hines, a 3rd grade student. "If there was a real fire, we need to go out to that spot."
The Bedford County Department of Fire and Rescue teamed up with the Moneta Fire Department for this event. The county department will work with community departments to bring this program to every elementary school in the county.
