Martinsville, VA - Hurricane Sandy victims will soon be getting a big donation from the Martinsville-Henry County area.
Miss Martinsville and Henry County Bronwyn Hairston organized a clothing drive for victims.
Hairston says the natural disaster hit close to home since she has friends in the New York and New Jersey area.
With volunteer help, she collected more than 5,000 items, including coats, shoes, blankets even stuffed animals.
She says it took her a week to sort nearly 150 boxes. Hairston says helping others is all part of the platform she ran on.
"Well my platform is V.O.I.C.E. which stands for Volunteer Opportunities In Communities Everywhere. And basically as part of that I feel it is my responsibility to give back to people who need it the most."
God's Pit Crew in Danville will take the items to victims in the New York area.
